Apart from the routine stories about food places of various kinds, some of the best fun we have doing Consider The Sauce is when a little lateral thinking or imagination kicks in.
Sometimes posts are generated by places or incidents we witness when out and about.
Sometimes they’re generated by conversations we’re having.
Sometimes, too, they bubble up and come to nothing or hunker down for some long-term hibernation.
Such has been the latter case with this idea until it was nudged from its slumber by a recent story by Ms Baklover at Footscray Food Blog.
My knowledge of the stories behind these intriguing glimpses of Footscray’s yesteryears is, in a very few cases, extremely sketchy.
For the rest, it’s non-existent!

Terrific pics Kenny. The Ethnic Chinese Happy Age Association sign always brings a smile to my face when I go past on the way to the market or the station.
It’s fascinating to think of the lives these places have had in the past. There are a couple of lovely but decaying Art Deco shop fronts in the Mall that I like checking out while wandering past.
On a similar note of bygone days, the building that now houses Acqua e Vino used to be owned by my partner’s grandfather, and he ran a drapery there. Always makes me look at the place a bit more closely whenever we go there for a drink.

It’s great how you can see the Mediterranean past, like Ithaca House. I remember a shop in Leeds St in the 80s that sold piano accordions, maybe part of the Hellenic building?

Thanks guys – makes it worth the effort. James, that is a good thread. Some overlap, but I decided to stick with buildings that had signage of some kind. Yarraville next?
