We are fans of the new school of ritzy burger joints, with the Grill’d chain being a favourite.
Of course, if you really want to lash out you can go to a flash restaurant and pay way more than $20 for a burger, but those sorts of extremes seem absurd. And what use is a burger around which you can’t get you hands?
We find the Grill’d burgers and chips real tasty and well worth the price.
Sometimes, though, it’s just right to go down the path of your more orthodox Aussie burger – the kind of thing served up by your local fish and chip/burger establishment.
It’s amazing how different the taste and flavour is from the more American-style offerings of Grill’d and its ilk. It’s almost like a whole different kind of food. Still good, sometimes great, but different.
One of our locals did the job for us.
It’s a bright and clean no-nonsense takeaway shop, with seating available on stools that front the window.
Our order of burgers (cheese and bacon cooked; onion and tomato uncooked), chips and the obligatory can of that Coca Cola stuff cost $17. Doesn’t seem that cheap does it? But the same deal at Grill’d would cost at least $10 more.
The chips were ungreasy and good, but not great. The burgers were a fine example of their kind – not particularly filling, but just perfect for a pre-Grand Final lunch.
Hmmm, I am anti chip in a box like you are anti plastic fork. Shouldn’t make the food taste any different, but to me, it just does. That said, I did just eat chips from Ebi out of a box and they were pretty darn good!

Different strokes … I reckon wrapping chips and other stuff in paper makes ’em soggy. Soggy = bad.

They do a fine fish and chips meal. That’s our chippie of choice currently. Decent sized crunchy chips, yum. Perfect when I just cannot be bothered cooking!

That’s good to know. We haven’t tried the one just around a corner, or our Yarraville local, as they don’t have seating. Although a friend is a big fan of the grilled salmon at the Yarraville establishment. That’s the place that once had a sign up that said: “Calamari rings 50c, real calamari $1.”

For weighty considerations related to health, fish ‘n’ chips for our household are usually reserved for holidays or after significant exercise. But we have occasionally tried the Charles St fish & chippery / hamburger joint and another place (which does have seating) in Geelong Rd (I suppose it would be Kingsville).
If health is not taken into account and enjoyment is paramount, you can’t beat a hamburger with the lot at the Charles St establishment. Their chips are usually good, but the fish (battered) is a bit variable (this is an opinion from a long time back) … can be great. It’s very popular and often has long queues, so they must do something right.
The Geelong Rd place is consistently good for fish & chips. A friendly couple do hamburgers as well. The tables area is basic, but roomy.
I’d be interested in your assessment of these two places, but I reckon they may give the Victoria St one a run for its money. Perhaps not upmarket enough for considerthesauce?

Mate, when it comes to markets I can go more down than you any old day. No, as stated above the problem with the Charles St place is lack of seating. I’ll be checking out the Geelong Rd place …

I am a fan of Grilld too. Although I used to have it once a week, I believe I overdosed myself!
Nothing beats an Aussie burger from the little shop either!

Yeah, I can imagine Grill’d could be overdone. Happily, the relatively premium prices keep me from overindulging.

We’re regulars of the Victoria St fish and chippery. We don’t do a lot of cooking at home and it’s one of our regular take-aways.
The chips are a bit crisper and the steak sandwiches hit the spot. Best of all, owner/proprietor/front-of-house-man Nick looks after us!
They’ve also added some al fresco dining tables out front. But we’ll be taking ours home. Our adage is, ‘when you’re on a good thing’.
